1. Getting to Sabah

Option A: Tawau Airport

The journey to Mabul Island starts with a flight to Tawau Airport (TWU), which is the closest airport to the island. Tawau is well-connected to major Malaysian cities like Semporna,  Lahad Datu, Sandakan, Ranau, Kundasang, and Kota Kinabalu.

  • From Kuala Lumpur: Flights from KL to Tawau typically take around 2 hours and 45 minutes.
  • From Kota Kinabalu: The flight is shorter, taking just about 1 hour.

Option B: Sandakan Airport

Alternatively, travelers can reach Mabul Island via Sandakan Airport (SDK), located on the northeastern coast of Sabah. While Sandakan is not as close to Mabul as Tawau, it offers a scenic and adventurous route for those who wish to explore more of Sabah’s natural beauty.

  • From Kuala Lumpur: Flights from KL to Sandakan typically take about 2 hours and 45 minutes.
  • From Kota Kinabalu: The flight duration is around 45 minutes to 1 hour.

Major airlines like AirAsia and Malaysia Airlines operate regular flights to Tawau and Sandakan from Kuala Lumpur and Kota Kinabalu.

2. Getting to Semporna by land

Option A: From tawau

Once you’ve arrived in Tawau, the next step is to reach the coastal town of Semporna, which serves as the gateway to Mabul and Sipadan Islands.

  • By Car/Van: You can book a taxi or private transfer through us from Tawau Airport to Semporna. The drive takes approximately 1 hour.

Option B: Sandakan Airport

If you’re traveling from Sandakan, you’ll need to make your way to Semporna, the key access point for Mabul Island and Sipadan.

  • By Bus: Daily bus services operate from Sandakan to Semporna, covering a scenic route through Sabah’s rainforests and coastal areas. The journey takes about 5 to 6 hours.
  • By Private Transfer or Taxi: A quicker option is to hire a private transfer or taxi, with the drive taking around 4 to 5 hours, depending on traffic and road conditions.

3. Boat ride to Mabul island

From Semporna, you will need to take a boat to Mabul Island, which will be organized by our team. Please ensure you confirm your trip before arrival. The daily boat departs at 8:30 a.m. However, if you are in a group of at least four, we can arrange the boat according to your time of arrival.

  • Boat Trip Duration: The ride from Semporna to Mabul Island takes approximately 45 minutes to 1 hour, depending on sea conditions and weather.
  • Types of Boats: Most transfers use speedboats, which are both efficient and comfortable.

When to go

Year-round condition

Borneo, often called “The Land Below the Wind,” doesn’t have a monsoon or typhoon season like many parts of Asia. Since it’s a tropical country, it can rain at any time, but the rain usually lasts only a couple of hours. . Mabul Island offers incredible diving year-round, but certain months are often preferred for their calm seas and great visibility. The average water temperature is around 27-30°C through out the year.

This is just a general guide:

February – June & October – December 

  • Calm Sea
  • Visibility between 15-40 meters
  • Water temperature rarely drop below 28°C.

July – September & December – January

  • Maves can be slightly bigger but still manageble but fantastic condition can still occur, as weather varies year to year.
  • visibility may reduced, but uts often brings closer encounters with marine life, making everydive memorable.

No matter when you visit, Sipadan and Mabul Island promise an incredible underwater experience year-round!

    Travel Tips

    Pack Light:
    Given the boat transfers, its best to trvel light and avoid bringing large suitcase.

    Plan Ahead:
    Boat transfer are typically scheduled in advance, so make sure to coordinate with us to avoid missing your ride.

    Currency:
    There are no ATMs on mabul island, so it’s good idea to withdraw cash in Tawau or Semporna.

    Diving permits:
    If you’re planning to dive at Sipadan island, you’ll need a permit. These are limited and should be booked throught us in advance.

    Stay Hydrated and Use Sunscreen:
    The tropical sun can be intense, so drink plenty of water and apply sunscreen regularly to protect your skin.

    Bring a Camera:
